The Lectures of Sir Astley Cooper . on the Principles and Practice of Surgery

The Lectures Of Sir Astley Cooper. On The Principles And Practice Of Surgery by Sir Astley Cooper. The work presented here is Volume III of Sir Astley Cooper’s celebrated surgical lectures, with Frederick Tyrrell’s Additional Notes and Cases. It provides detailed treatments of hernia (including inguinal, femoral, umbilical, ventral, and congenital varieties), methods of reduction (taxis), use of trusses, and indications for operative intervention, as well as complications such as irreducible and strangulated hernias, and the management of wounds and emergency procedures. The volume also covers dislocations and reductions across major joints—hips, knees, elbows, ankles—dense with anatomical description, operative steps, and post-operative care. Supplemented by errata and numerous case examples, the work remains a foundational reference for historical and practical surgery. The volume illuminates the era’s surgical thinking on anatomy, trauma, and operative strategy, including the use of tobacco enemas, cold therapy, and ligatures as part of treatment.
