Six Lectures on the Text of the New Testament and the Ancient Manuscripts Which Contain It: Chiefly Addressed to Those Who Do Not Read Greek

Six Lectures On The Text Of The New Testament And The Ancient Manuscripts Which Contain It: Chiefly Addressed To Those who do Not Read Greek by Frederick Henry Ambrose Scrivener is a foundational, accessible introduction to textual criticism of the New Testament. Scrivener surveys how the sacred books have been transmitted over centuries through manuscripts, versions, and patristic writers, emphasizing the existence of numerous textual variants and the scholarly methods used to recover the original text. He explains the nature and construction of manuscripts, including the distinction between uncials and cursives, the use of palimpsests, and paleographic dating, while noting the value and limitations of ancient translations (Syriac, Latin, Coptic, Gothic, Armenian) as independent witnesses. The lectures survey the principal Greek manuscripts (such as B, Sinaiticus, A, C, D, E, L) and the major auxiliary materials, and culminate with discussions of important Gospel and non-Gospel passages to illustrate textual decision-making. Throughout, the aim is to make the science of textual criticism intelligible to lay readers and to demonstrate the integrity of the English Bible alongside the labors of scholars who study it.
