About the Author
Fiona Spalding-Smith was born and raised in the United Kingdom and studied fine arts at the University of Westminster in London. She moved to Toronto in the early '70s, where she established a career as a photographer specializing in architecture. Her photographs have been published internationally in books and in periodicals such as Architectural Review, Interiors, City & Country Home and Harrowsmith Country Life, and have been exhibited in Canada and Europe. A selection of her work was chosen to be part of the National Photography Collection of Archives Canada. A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, she now lives in Nelson, British Columbia.
Barbara A. Humphreys was born in Saskatchewan and educated there and in Manitoba, graduating in architecture from the University of Manitoba. Her career in private practice and government took her to Thunder Bay, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. She has written and lectured widely on the history, conservation and restoration of this heritage, and in 1992 was awarded the Gabrielle Leger Medal for her outstanding contribution to the conservation of the architectural heritage of Canada. A former director of the Rideau Valley Conservation Review Board, she has resided for many years in the town of Manotick, along the banks of the Rideau Canal.
