Legends: 52 People Who Made a Difference: Bio-Sketches for Reading, Telling, Listening, Writing, and Research

We are currently refreshing our shelves and this title is discounted!

Legends presents fifty-two engaging biographical sketches designed to bring influential figures from history, culture, and public life directly into the ESL/EFL classroom. Organized into thirteen thematic groups―each containing four remarkable individuals―the book showcases a wide spectrum of “legends”: folk heroes, entertainers, adventurers, activists, reformers, presidents, and other figures whose achievements shaped communities, countries, or the wider world.

Each biography is written in accessible English and structured to support multiple language skills. Students read the short profile, discuss the person’s life and contributions, listen to the accompanying audio narration (optional), and engage in writing or research tasks that encourage deeper exploration. The texts provide ample opportunities for summarizing, retelling, role-playing interviews, comparing lives, or drawing connections between historical figures and contemporary issues.

The format is ideal for integrated-skills instruction, multicultural units, interdisciplinary lessons, or any classroom in which students benefit from content that is meaningful, inspiring, and rooted in real human stories. Because the sketches are short and modular, teachers can use them in any order and adapt them to a wide range of levels. The stories lend themselves naturally to vocabulary work, critical thinking discussions, presentation practice, and writing assignments such as timelines, character analyses, and personal responses.

With its rich diversity of voices and ready-to-use activities, Legends is a powerful tool for developing language skills while inspiring learners through the lives of extraordinary people.
