Lena came to me from a house I purchased in 2004 when I was teaching at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The house been vacant for more than a year. It was filled with debris: old clothes, a kitchen trash can filled with plastic grocery shopping bags, a large container of Beanie Babies still in packaging, a few odds and ends of furniture, and over 5,000 books. . The house was a miracle waiting for me. The previous owner, George Everington, had been the town druggist. . His drugstore, founded in 1882, was located on Main Street just a block away if you cut through the alley. Lena was undoubtedly a family member. Relax and enjoy a relic from another time.

About the Author

Rhoda Lamastus Locklear grew up in Butler Co., Ky. When she was ten years old her parents started "Rhoda's Antiques". She was far more interested in reading The Antique Trader and attending auctions than in the high school curriculum. Nevertheless she earned her B.S. in Elementary Education and M.A. Reading at Western Kentucky University. She completed her Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction and Media from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Dr. Locklear has taught in public and private schools and universities in eight U.S. states among them, St. Andrews Presbyterian College. She and her husband Jose’ were owner-operators of Delicattesses Catalina, a prospering jam, relishes and hot sauce business for 22 years in Venezuela until his death. She now lives in Las Vegas where she writes whenever she can conjure up the willpower. Dr. Locklear has two lovely daughters, Callie Green Bustamante and Catalina Ramirez Ottolina with her husband Ramarti Ottolina and three wonderful grandchildren, Robert, John and Luna Azul. Ron Niemer has been her loving support system for the past five years.
