The Leonberger: A Comprehensive Guide to the Lion King of Breeds

Caroline Bliss-Isberg has spent countless hours researching, interviewing and documenting to produce what is by far the most comprehensive collection of Leonberger facts and history every assembled. With great affection for this imposing but affable breed, Bliss-Isberg explains how it managed to outwit a hostile dog 19th-Century fancy, made invaluable (and little known) contributions to the Saint Bernard and Newfoundland, survived two world wars, and now faces unique challenges in the 21st Century. Filled with historical photos and illustrations, some of them never before published, this book is an absolute must for anyone interested in this endearing German breed.

Reviews:

"This is not "just another book about Leonbergers." I have read many books about the breed, but I have never seen such an extensive presentation on the origin and development of the Leonberger, from its very beginning, through 170 years, to today! The writer give us information that is not found in earlier books." -- Per Kr. Andersen, judge and vice president of the International Leonberger Union

"Not only is this book a unique history of a once-rare large-breed dog, it is also the story of a passionate love affair. Bliss-Isberg has written an amazingly readable history of the Leonberger that begins in Europe in the middle of the 19th Century and continues up until the present day. This splendid book is a must read for all Leo lovers!" -- Mary Decher, von Klingelberg Kennels, founding member and past president of the Leonberger Club of America

"'The Leonberger' is one of the best breed books I have ever read. The research that went into this gem is just unbelievable. If you are a breeder, exhibitor or a fan of this wonderful breed, you must have this book." -- Pat Hastings, author and AKC judge
