Die Lessing-Forschung steht seit l�ngerer Zeit vor der Herausforderung, dass sie zwar ein Zentrum der germanistischen Aufkl�rungsforschung bildet, gleichzeitig aber �ber keine Textbasis verf�gt, die modernen wissenschaftlichen Anspr�chen gen�gt. Als grundlegend revisionsbed�rftig gilt die einzige historisch-kritische Gesamtausgabe der Werke und Briefe Lessings, die sogenannte Ausgabe Lachmann/Muncker (abgeschlossen 1924). Alle seit dieser Ausgabe erschienenen Editionen bauen auf ihr auf. Zwar haben sie die Textgrundlage zum Teil erweitert (das gilt insbesondere f�r die Briefe von und an Lessing), textkritisch und -genetisch gen�gen alle diese Ausgaben den Anspr�chen zeitgen�ssischer Editorik jedoch in keiner Weise.

Dieser Umstand ist Ausgangspunkt f�r das editio-Themenheft, das angesichts der Komplexit�t der Herausforderung konkrete Perspektiven f�r eine fundierte Lessing-Edition entwickelt. Es pr�sentiert die Ergebnisse einer Arbeitstagung, die im M�rz 2020 im Lessinghaus zu Wolfenb�ttel stattfand.

Ziel des Bandes ist es, ausgehend von den Impulsen der Tagung modulare Bausteine f�r eine textkritische und digitale Lessing-Edition in den n�chsten Jahren zu entwickeln, damit Forschung und interessierter �ffentlichkeit im Lessing-Jahr 2029 eine neue und zeitgen�ssischen Anspr�chen gen�gende Basis f�r die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Aufkl�rer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing zur Verf�gung steht.
