Swiger discovered his love of reading and gift for writing after being sentenced to 21-50 years after refusing to testify at his older brother's murder trial. The Ohio Supreme Court later overturned his conviction, but not before Swiger served 17 years.
While incarcerated Swiger earned two Associates Degrees with a 4.0 GPA, went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, before receiving a full scholarship to study theology at the Reformed Theological Seminary. Swiger became the first Ohio prisoners since William Sydney Porter - better known as O Henry - to become a published author while incarcerated.
