I am a proud stepparent. I did not become a gratified stepparent overnight, and it was not an easy journey--not even close for me or the custodial parent of my stepchildren. Step parenting initially for me was like trying to see through the eyes of a blind man in a strange and unfamiliar place.
To allow truth to speak for itself, my becoming a stepparent was a journey that I will not care to repeat unless, of course, I have a road map of what to expect, how to handle the X factor and the stepchildren, emotions associated with step parenting and a custodial parent that was aware of his rights, boundaries and he was enlightened on the dynamics of blending his previous family with me. For example, a book titled "Take the Step"Out of Step Parenting" would have made a great road map.
For me, the biological parent, this step parenting business is a clueless mystery to which no one has a perfected plan or established directions to be successful. In other words, life's experiences, stories heard or told, or even your fantasies will not come close to the reality of some of the hidden agendas, bad behaviors, rude responses, games played, sacrifices taken, tight lipped responses and the ignorance you will experience during the process of becoming a blended family. I am a pretty quiet type of guy so - no screaming! However, we are hopeful that after reading this book, you will be in better control of your situations.
