A Letter Addressed To. William Marsh. On The Nature And Tendency Of Certain Religious Principles. Denominated Evangelical Occasioned By His Questions And Answers On The Catechism by Edward John Burrow. This 1819 polemic, written by a Church of England clergyman (the Rev. E. J. Burrow, minister of Hampstead Chapel and late fellow of Magdalen College, Cambridge), addresses Rev. William Marsh of Colchester. Burrow challenges Marsh’s evangelical program, particularly the contents of "Questions and Answers on the Catechism" and the tract "Plain Reasons for Nonconformity to the World." He argues that Marsh’s hermeneutics rest on narrow canons of interpretation, and that the application of Scripture has led to religious and social consequences at odds with the Church of England’s formularies. Burrow defends Anglican standards, contends that regeneration is connected to Baptism and church fellowship, and warns that such Evangelical principles threaten church unity, charity, and social bonds. He analyzes key texts (John 17:16; Romans 12; 1 John 2:15–17) to show dangers of isolated proof-text interpretation. The Postscript reproduces Calvinistic Articles and Dort canons to contrast with Anglican teaching, urging readers toward cautious scriptural study and fidelity to the established church.
