The Letter of Aristeas provides a mesmerizing window into that very moment. This ancient text is the primary historical source for the legendary origins of the Septuagint-the first Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. Traditionally written as a correspondence from Aristeas, a high-ranking official in the court of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, to his brother Philocrates, it tells the grand story of how the greatest library in the world sought to encompass the sacred wisdom of the Jewish people.
Far more than a simple administrative record, this work is a rich tapestry of philosophical inquiry, diplomatic intrigue, and cultural appreciation. It describes in breathtaking detail the magnificent gifts sent to Jerusalem, the majesty of the Temple, and the profound wisdom of the seventy-two Jewish elders selected for the task. As these scholars gather on the island of Pharos, they engage in a series of intellectual banquets with the King, answering complex questions on governance, morality, and the nature of God, proving that their ancient laws were not only divine but also perfectly compatible with the highest ideals of Greek philosophy.
What You Will Discover in This Modern Translation:
- The Birth of the Septuagint - Uncover the legendary narrative of how seventy-two scholars translated the Hebrew Law into Greek in exactly seventy-two days.
- The Splendor of Ancient Alexandria - Step into the court of Ptolemy II and the legendary Library of Alexandria during the height of its intellectual glory.
- A Philosophical Meeting of Minds - Explore the "Symposium" section where the Jewish elders display their profound wisdom through moral and political dialogues with the King.
- The Sacred Temple of Jerusalem - Read vivid, first-hand descriptions of the ancient Jewish Temple, its priests, and the vibrant religious life of the era.
- A Landmark in Cultural Exchange - Gain a deeper understanding of how the transition from Hebrew to Greek paved the way for the spread of Jewish thought and the eventual rise of early Christianity.
