About this title

Synopsis

A Letter To Dr. Percival, On The Prevention Of Infectious Fevers: And An Address To The College Of Physicians At Philadelphia, On The Prevention Of The American Pestilence by John Haygarth. This work brings together Haygarth’s empirical investigations into the propagation of infectious fevers and the means to prevent them. It outlines Preliminary Principles derived from Chester and Manchester cases, including tables of fever progression in families and wards, and argues that contagion operates within a very narrow physical distance. The text advocates practical measures: separating fever patients from healthy households, improving ventilation and cleanliness, and maintaining dedicated fever wards with strict hygiene and disinfection routines. It culminates in Practical Conclusions and Rules of Prevention applicable to nursing, schools, hospitals, the army, and naval settings. The later Address to Philadelphia’s College of Physicians discusses the American Pestilence (Yellow Fever) and argues for its importation from the West Indies rather than a domestic atmosphere, urging data-driven policy and coordinated quarantine. Overall, the work blends medical observation with public health policy and hospital reform.
