A Letter Signed Clerus Anglicanus To The Editor Of The Edinburgh Review In Reply To An Article On Todd's Life Of Cranmer. Clerus Anglicanus writes a pointed, polemical defense of Archbishop Cranmer and the Church of England against criticisms raised in a December Edinburgh Review article about Todd’s Life of Cranmer. The pamphlet argues that Cranmer’s personal failings arose from the era’s religious climate, yet his role in propagating Protestant readings and making the Bible accessible was nobly transformative. It contests the notion that the Reformation was incomplete for 250 years, and defends the episcopal establishment as an ancient, legitimate form of church government grounded in apostolic succession. Throughout, the author challenges anonymous censorship, defends the Church of England’s national character, and defends ordination by laying on of hands as a biblically rooted practice. The letter culminates in a robust defense of Anglican identity, liberty of conscience, and the enduring authority of church institutions in English life (1832).
