A handsome example of the third edition of Jane West"s substantial conduct book for young men, complete in three volumes, guiding the reader through contemporary manners, morality, marriage and Christian belief. The third edition, complete in three volumes. A work of conduct literature, written as a series of moral and religious letters intended to guide a young man entering adult society. The letters address the formation of a virtuous masculine character. The work moves from the domestic and social guidance of the opening volumes to increasingly theological concerns, with later letters concerning deism, public worship, and the claims of the Church of England. The final volume discusses advice on marriage, the education of children, human perfectability and the moral dangers youth face in contemporary society. Jane West (1758-1852) was a poet, novelist and moralist, publishing under her married name and, in earlier works, as "Prudentia Homespun." Her novels include A Gossip"s Story, A Tale of the Times, The Infidel Father and The Loyalists. With an advertisement leaf to the rear of volume I. Rebacked, retaining original endpapers.
