About this Item
This is a limited edition of 400 copies, of which this is number 282. A small presentation card from Helen Fahnestock Hubbard is clipped to the ffep. Her note reads "At a time when the forces of disunion were never more destructive, I take pleasure in presenting "The Letters of Lafayette to Washington" as a concrete reminder that two great nations can remain at peace for more than a century and be mutually helpful in every crisis." Hubbard was sister of Clarence Fahnestock, for whom the beloved Fahnestock Park is named and she had her own estate on land contiguous to the park. She was a philanthropist and collector, amassing an important collection of autographs and historical documents that was auctioned by Parke-Bernet after her death in 1956.
