Letters from Rome on the Council

Letters From Rome On The Council. A dense, on-the-ground chronicle of the Vatican Council I in Rome (1870) tracing a dramatic clash over papal infallibility and the future architecture of church authority. The narrative centers on power struggles between the central papal court and a politically diverse episcopate, where procedural changes (regolamento) concentrate debate in commissions and curb open discussion, while the Pope seals decrees with limited consent. Proponents, led by Pius IX and allied with Jesuits, push toward a rapid definition; opponents from Germany, France, Hungary, and beyond insist on episcopal consent, moral unanimity, and the preservations of synodal authority. The book threads together diplomacy, public opinion, and media campaigns, including voices from Newman, Gratry, Veuillot, and Margotti. It covers key moments—February interruptions, the March decree on infallibility, later voting on the Schema de Fide, and the tensions surrounding the July 1870 outcomes—showing how a centralized program and factional rivalries converge to redefine the church’s relation to state, history, and truth.
