Synopsis

This book, based on a PhD thesis written under Professor F. F. Bruce at the U of Manchester, is an exegetical study of the 7 letters of the book of Revelation in the context of the local situations to which they were addressed. Using independent sources (library, epigraphical, archaeological, numismatic) and informed by a firsthand knowledge of the biblical sites, it presents in the clearest way possible a picture of the environment to which the letters are directed. The study of the text is integrated into that of the background, and the classical work of Sir William N. Ramsay is reassessed. At a time when the sociological approach to the NT is attracting much attention it is important that contextual studies should be rooted in a rigorous treatment of the evidence. The concepts in the letters have a strong OT base, but the case for local allusion and application is argued cumulatively and persuasively. The larger picture that emerges of the historical situation of the book has a wider relevance to critical problems involving the history of the church in an obscure period of the later first centuy.
