After completing a Ph.D. at Stanford in catalytic chemistry, he co-founded his first entrepreneurial venture, Catalytica, in 1974. The firm's discoveries led to over one hundred patents and the formation of three companies, one of which became, under Levy's leadership, the largest supplier to the pharmaceutical industry in North America.
