Letters to a Young Poet

The uncorrected proof for Stephen Mitchell's translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's famous "Letters to a Young Poet." Rilke (1875-1926) wrote the letters to an aspiring poet, Franz Xaver Kappus, between 1903 and 1908. Kappus had written to Rilke, seeking Rilke's approval of his poems. Rilke doesn't comment much on the quality of Kappus's verses, but he's generous with advice on art, solitude, and the writing life. Kappus published the 10 letters from Rilke in 1929, three years following Rilke's death. While there have been numerous translations since then, this version by Stephen Mitchell was widely praised by critics.
