Lettre De M. Demours. A M. Petit. En Réponse À Sa Critique D'un Rapport Sur Une Maladie De L'oeil Survennu Après L'inoculation De La Petite Verole — Pierre Demours. This eighteenth-century medical letter, written by Pierre Demours, responds to M. Petit’s critique of a report on an eye disease that appeared after inoculation against smallpox. Demours argues that the report describes only the eye disease occurring after inoculation and that the narrative correctly reflects events that preceded and followed the procedure. The text recounts the medical history of a patient, the son of Baron D’Andrezel, and details the sequence of ocular inflammation, corneal involvement, and recovery under a sequence of topical and systemic treatments. He cites colleagues Grandjean, Guerin, and de la Faye, defends his methods, and questions alleged exaggerations or conflicts of interest. The letter blends clinical observation, anatomical discussion, and practical cautions about ophthalmic care and inoculation, offering valuable insight into 18th-century medicine and the debates of the era.
