Synopsis

Rudolf Inselmann was a missionary of the American Lutheran Church who served in the mountains northwest of Madang from 1936 to 1943. From Nobonob Mountain he could daily see Madang's costal strip with its plantations, harbours and offshore islands spread out below him. He could also see the Noboonob congregation's mission field stretching away to the northwest around the southern flanks of the precipitous and uncontrolled cannibal country of the Adelbert Ranges. This provided a clear picture of the deep contrasts, profound misunderstandings and simmering conflicts between the invading Western civilisation, represented by labour recruiters, Christian missionaries and colonial governments, and Melanesian villagers, steeped in their traditional cultures. The Letub was a New Guinean cult designed to remove the injustice and circumvent the unwillingness of the White man to share the secrets of his culture's material wealth or kago with his Brown neighbours. Inselmann provides the only firsthand account of this movement and a believable study of its roots in colonial times to hel ptoday's people of both races to understand and respond to its cry for justice and compassion, which still awaits fulfillment.
