"O" Level English Law. Third Edition

Reforms and changes in the law have continued unabated since the publication of the second edition. The most radical development has been the entry of the United Kingdom into the European Community. This has introduced new sources of law into the English legal system, both in the form of legislation and by way of the decisions of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. On the institutional plane we have seen the system of Assizes swept away after seven hundred years, together with the Quarter Sessions which have served the community for centuries. The new Crown Court is now a well-established substitute. From the point of view of the individual living in a difficult economic climate, the most hopeful development has been the recent growth of interest in consumer protection by the legislature, the Fair Trading Act passed in 1973 and the Consumer Credit Act of 1974 which is being implemented gradually, offering a fairer balance in dealings between ordinary people and large organisations.
