Lewis and Clark Meet Oregon's Forests: Lessons in Dynamic Nature

Drawing on the expedition journals and other early explorers' accounts, Gail Wells examines three northwestern Oregon landscapes (Tillamook Head, the lower Willamette Valley and Cascade foothills, and the Alsea River country) to show how fire, weather, and Native American land management, including deliberate burning, created the forests the explorers described, and what that history offers for forest management and conservation today.
