In his Autobiography, Mill predicts that the essay On Liberty is "likely to survive longer than anything else that I have written." He goes on to say that the essay is the expression of a "single truth:" "the importance, to man and society, of a large variety of types of character, and of giving full freedom to human nature to expand itself in innumerable and conflicting directions." In the essay itself, Mill defines his subject as "the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual." He defends the absolute freedom of individuals to engage in conduct not harmful to others, and the near-absolute freedom to express and discuss opinions of all kinds. Mill's essay survives, as he had predicted, because his powerful message is still widely rejected by the powerful, and by those who continue to seek power over the lives of others.

About the Author
C. L. Ten is professor of philosophy and head of the philosophy department at the National University of Singapore. He was recently a visiting professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

We do not accept returns unless our description of the book is faulty, and then only with our prior approval. If you wish to return a book, you must contact us within three business days of receipt of book.

All orders shipped via media U. S. mail.
We require our customers to have books or order over $35US in value sent via insured mail, amount according to USPS and destination. The customer will pay cost of insurance.
Once an item is shipped and leaves our posession and is with the United States Postal Service, we have no control over delivery. Please contact your local post office.
IN the event an insured item is not delivered, we will assist by contacting our local post office to attempt to obtain the last known location. In the event and insured item requires an insurace claim, we will make the claim. Any refund is dependant upon the outcome of the USPS claim. No refunds will be issued unless and until the USPS has agreed and paid the claim. Then, only the cost of the book/item will be refunded- no shipping will be refunded.
