The terms information and knowledge are often used synonymously. It is contended that the phrase knowledge and information is redundant and occasionally refers to certain kinds of knowledge as information while another view is that there is a difference. One crucial difference between knowledge and information is that knowledge is cognitively structured. Information has also been defined as the act of informing and knowledge as the contents of the message. This does not define what informing is. Shera contends that epistemology is the foundation of librarianship. If this is so it should equally apply to information science unless information is treated as a physical quantity or neural phenomenon devoid of social and cognitive context. 292 pp.
