Item description from seller

Lithographic portrait from waist up of Thomas Hart Seymour, in fair to good condition, with soiling to surface, long mended tear at right side and other creases. Under the title is two lines of text: "After the death of Col. Ransom, the first to haul down the Mexican colors from the sumitt of Chapultepec and to run up the American." Seymour was elected Governor of Connecticut in 1850, after which he was appointed ambassador to Russia by President Franklin Pierce. He fell into disrepute during the Civil War for this pro-slavery leanings. This portrait was taken from a painting by A. H. Emmons and printed by L. Nagel of New York. It was put onto stone by Francis D'Avignon, a noted artist and lithographer. Peters (America on Stone) p. 152 calls D'Avignon a "Portrait lithographer of the very first rank." and "a very important figure." Born in 1830, this was among his earlier works, though Peters identifies one from 1844.
