This is the account of a military expedition in 1846 led by W. H. Emory, a topographical engineer, which ventured from Fort Leavenworth, Missouri, to San Diego, California. It is a diary of the expedition from August 2, 1846, to January 20, 1847. Scholars of the American West consider Emory's report to be a gold mine of accurate, first-hand information. Editor Ross Calvin provides impressive explanatory notes.
