Octavo hardcover in near fine condition, of half black cloth with gilt and half cream colored boards lined in a pattern of small squares in a yellow graph design. The dust jacket is also near fine, with a narrow tanned strip and very light wear along the top edge, printed in black and white with a back round of the same cream with yellow lines graph paper. Intact price. This is the often quoted, but seldom seen "Notes of a Military Reconnoissance" by W. H. Emory, here reprinted for the first time since 1848. A journey to ascertain the value of the vast southwest with the idea of trying to take it from Mexico. Includes the Emory map, the first professional chart of the country "west of Bent's".
