The humorous story of a South American monkey-scamp Dandy Jack and his adventures in and out of the circus, the perennial star performer in General Welsh's Circus, rich and racing story of his pranks and general mischief-making with human and animal. Edition not stated, but perhaps a First Edition as the copyright says "1859" and no additional printings stated. Bound in heavy, brown, pebbly buckram cloth, gilt-stamped lettering and illustration to cover and spine. Blind-stamped borders and florals to front and rear boards, quite nice. Bumping to spine head and foot. Occasional foxing, some waffling of and wear to endpapers, else clean and unmarked. Some fanciful illustrations, including a hand-colored black-and-white engraving at frontis of three anthropomorphized monkeys one of whom is Dandy Jack, who rides and cavorts upon ponies and people. Lovely engraved headers, tails and initials. 120 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition bound in brown buckram. Text has occasional foxing but is nice and without other flaws. Binding is sound, primary flaw being a 1/2" square chip from the spine right at the lettering. Boards are very sound front cover gilt lettering strong, corners lightly bumped, slightly cocked.
