Life of Buonaparte (Democratic Innocece/Democratic Humility)

Original hand-colored engraving. Engraved image has a plate line, but no watermark on the paper. Very good condition. Two small satirical cartoons by Gillray on one sheet, one showing "The young Buonaparte & his wretched relatives in their native poverty while FreeBooters in the Island of Corsica." The other shows a ragged Napoleon as a child in front of a benevolent-looking army officer, "Buonaparte when a boy received thro the King's bounty into the Ecole Militaire at Paris." Published by John Miller, Bridge Street, London & W. Blackwood, Edinburgh. This contemporary hand-coloured caricature, is from the collection of Gillray's works issued under the publisher's imprint John Miller, slightly smaller than the 1808 original, but the colouring is period and NOT modern.
