A smart limited edition copy of Cavendish's important biography of Cardinal Wolsey, with illustrations by Holbein. One of 1030 limited edition copies printed at the Riverside Press, Cambridge, in the publisher"s original quarter cloth binding with paper boards and pictorial gilt to the front board. Previous owner"s ink inscription to the front free end paper. Illustrated with a frontispiece and ten plates by Holbein. Collated, complete. George Cavendish was best known for this biography of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, which is considered to be the sole authentic record of many important historical events.As well as detailing the political machinations of the time, the biography also offers a detailed portrait of early sixteenth century court life. Cavendish worked under the Cardinal and it is believed that he took notes of Wolsey's conversations and movements for several years before writing the biography between 1554 and 1558. In the publisher"s original quarter cloth binding. Externally, smart, with light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot throughout, more so to the first and last couple of pages. Very Good Indeed.
