Two volumes bound in one, ESTC citation number R14824.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece to 'Contemplations'.Collated, complete.An insightful biography on Matthew Hale, with Hale's 'Contemplations Moral and Divine' Third Part bound to the rear.Hale was an influential jurist, judge, and barrister, alive during the seventeenth century. This biographical volume was published two decades after his death. Hale is noted for his treatise 'Historia Placitorum Coronae'.Biography written by Gilbert Burnet, a noted philosopher and historian who was a close friend of King William III.Bookplate of David Stather to the front paste down. Gift noted pasted to the verso of the title page. In a rebacked calf binding. Externally, rubbed to the boards. Boards are a little discoloured. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Preface of 'Life' a little closely trimmed to the head, affecting the running title only. The occasional ink annotation to 'Contemplations', by Ralph Johnson, and an ink inscription to the title page of 'Life'. Good. Seller Inventory # 855P10
