A very good two volume set in matching half leather bindings. 8vo. 8.5" x 5.25" x 1.25". Vol. I. :pp.xxiv / pp.572, + 3 engravings + 1 map ; Vol. II. : [16pp.]/pp.422, + 15 engravings. Each volume in matching brown half calf bindings, marbled boards. Spines with 4 raised bands, gilt banding and black leather title and volume numbers. Clear English text and engravings throughout, on lightly toned paper. A very good set. ** "Charles Jervas (also Jarvis; c. 1675 1739) was an Irish portrait painter, translator, and art collector of the early 18th century. His translation of Cervantes' novel Don Quixote, published posthumously in 1742 as being made by Charles "Jarvis" because of a printer's error has since come to be known as "the Jarvis translation". Jervas was first to provide an introduction to the novel including a critical analysis of previous translations of Don Quixote.
