Synopsis
This book may not help you play better football, but it certainly will improve your game in life. Vince Lombardi said "Football is like life..." Dr. Gustafson proves that converse is also true. Life is like football; a hard-hitting team game that you can't win unless you understand the rules.Everyone is born into the same game of life, yet there aren’t many books that lay out the rules. Of course, there are thousands of books that aim to motivate change by presenting recommendations for handling stress, maintaining a positive attitude, controlling your emotions, succeeding in your career, and finding happiness. This book highlights all of those issues, but without dispensing trite advice. Instead of telling how you should change, Dr. Gustafson focuses on how you can develop your own team, set your own goals, create your own playbooks, and plan your own winning strategies.Coach Lombardi saw many parallels between football and the game of life. But what are the rules that everyone must follow? And if life is really like football, who are your best teammates, and who are your most dangerous opponents? These are the kinds of questions tackled in this book. The game of life is complicated and sometimes painful. But the tough facts of life are easier to understand when presented in an entertaining and engaging way by comparing them to the game of football. Whether you are playing the first quarter or the fourth quarter of your life, this provocative book will help you to better understand the rules, identify the players, and develop a game plan to win.
About the Author
Dr. T. 'Gus' Gustafson is a native Texan with a cowboy's sense of individualism. He is a board-certified pediatrician who embarked on his first career in public health by investigating disease outbreaks for the Centers for Disease Control and the Texas State Health Department. He joined the computer revolution in the 1980's and began a second career by programming and marketing software for biostatistics. Next he founded a software company aimed at preventing hospital-acquired infections and promoting hospital employee health. After 25 years in the healthcare software business, and seeing three children through college, Dr. Gustafson and his wife "retired" to travel full-time in their RV. He is now pursuing his fourth career as an author. An avid football fan, he frequently saw parallels with life. "My breakthrough came watching the Cleveland-Tennessee game in October of 2014, when the Browns came back from a 25-point deficit to win the game 29 to 28," says Gustafson. "That's when I realized there are four quarters in the game of life, and I'm just beginning my fourth quarter."
