Antique copy of "The Life of GEORGE CRUIKSHANK" by Blanchard Jerrold. 1898 "New Edition" - complete in two Epochs; Chatto & Windus; London. The book contains 84 illustrations (including a special drawing by Gustave Dore titled "The Gin-Fiend" that forms the frontispiece to Epoch II that Dore drew as "a tribute to the genius of Cruikshank"). With a 32-page publisher's catalog at the back. From the author's Preface: "In the following pages I have endeavored to present George Cruikshank to the reader - not only as he lived and moved and worked, but also in the light in which he was held by his many friends and his distinguished critics. These pages should be accepted as memoires pour servir as material towards a just judgment of the artist and the man. I am indebted to George Cruikshank's friends for many personal anecdotes, and to my own recollections of him, ranging from my boyhood to his death, for the general outline of the 'dear old George,' whose humour and eccentricity delighted Dickens, Douglas Jerrold, Thackeray, and their friends for many years." Condition: Clean front cover; soiling on the spine; tiny stain spot on the back cover; sharp corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the hinge between pages 128/129, and 208/209. Tanning between pages 136 and 137 from a slip of paper left between them. The tissue paper over the frontispiece is attached, but has torn in a few places at the spine. The front end paper has 3 different names/inscription written in pen dated 1901 to 1930.
