About this Item
Twenty-seventh thousand, 8vo, pp. 304; 92 wood engravings throughout text, most full-page; red publishers cloth gilt; boards edgeworn and cocked, lower hinge starting, the occasional spotting to text but largely clean and unmarked, about very good. Wright appears to have spent a number of years traveling through the United States to lecture on India, where says he has travelled extensively. The chapters are largely the text of his lectures, which cover Indian religion, the state of women in India, habits and superstitions of the Thugs, a description of the Shasters, and Eastern Indian character and customs. Much of the text is an elaboration on the images, which it appears Wright used in the course of his lectures. As with many authors of his time, he describes India as a violent and morally bankrupt place, with a religion that encourages mostly self-mutilation and crime. Seller Inventory # 67725
