Life, Interrupted: Lessons I Learned After Losing My Daddy

A compassionate guide for grieving while still being asked to function.

Life doesn't pause for grief.

Paperwork still arrives. Decisions still demand answers. Faith may feel steady one moment-and shaken the next.

When her father died, Dr. Melanie B. Hoskins found herself navigating not only deep personal loss, but the systems that follow a death: legal processes, financial obligations, workplace expectations, and unanswered questions that refused to wait for emotional readiness.

Life, Interrupted: Lessons I Learned After Losing My Daddy is a compassionate, practical guide for those learning how to grieve while still being asked to function. Blending lived experience with professional insight, Dr. Hoskins offers clarity without pressure-providing language for hard conversations, guidance for navigating institutions, and reassurance for moments when faith feels complicated or incomplete.

This is not a book about "doing grief right." It is a companion for moving forward honestly, gently, and at your own pace.

Dr. Melanie B. Hoskins is an author, public policy expert, and CPA who writes at the intersection of lived experience and the systems that shape our lives. After the loss of her son and father, she found herself navigating not only grief, but also the legal, financial, and practical responsibilities that follow a loss. Like many people, she quickly realized how little guidance exists for handling what comes next. Holding a Ph.D. in Public Policy and an MBA, Dr. Hoskins draws on her personal experience and a career spanning corporate leadership and public service, with expertise in public policy, tax, technology, and organizational dynamics. This breadth gives her a unique ability to understand how systems, institutions, relationships, and networks shape people's experiences and to translate that complexity into practical guidance. She is the founder and managing member of Brightspot Publications, a mission-driven publishing company that creates books and resources to help individuals and families navigate loss, honor legacy, and make sense of the decisions and systems they encounter along the way. Through her writing, Dr. Hoskins approaches grief not as something to fix, but as something to move through with compassion, clarity, care, and community.
