The Life of Joseph Addison: in Two Volumes

The Life Of Joseph Addison: In Two Volumes by Lucy Aikin. This two-volume biography traces the life and literary career of Joseph Addison, one of early 18th-century England's most influential writers. The work surveys Addison's evolution from schooldays through his parliamentary career and his pivotal role in shaping public taste via periodicals such as the Tatler and Spectator, his engagements with Steele, Swift, Pope, and others, and his political life during the War of the Spanish Succession and the Hanoverian era. It discusses Addison's collaborations, his approach to moral reform in his essays, his defense of liberty, and his literary criticism and translations, including his involvement with Cato and the reception of his plays. The book also covers his Ireland secretaryship, marriage to the Countess Dowager of Warwick, his retirement and death in 1719, and the subsequent reception of his works. Drawing on letters, memorials, and contemporary reportage, Aikin presents a balanced portrait of Addison's public service, private virtues, and enduring influence on English letters.
