The Life and Labours of the Right Rev. William Tyrrell, D.D. First Bishop of Newcastle, New South Wales (Classic Reprint)

A frontier bishop built a lasting church system across a vast Australian diocese.

This biography highlights steady, hands-on leadership from humble beginnings to a mature diocesan structure.

In this account, the first bishop of Newcastle emerges as a practical organizer who faced a scattered population and limited resources. He laid foundations for worship, education, and governance, shaping a young church across distant towns and bush settlements. The narrative focuses on his care for clergy, his strategic endowments, and his efforts to establish synods and diocesan structures that outlived him.

• Builds and supports dozens of churches, parsonages, and schools across a huge region.
• Creates and sustains diocesan and, later, provincial church governance through synods.
• Advances religious education and the training of clergy amid challenges with Government relations.
• Provides long-term endowments and careful stewardship that outlived his own life.

Ideal for readers of religious history and Australian church history, this portrait offers a clear view of how one leader translated vision into enduring institutions.
