The Life and Letters of Barthold George Niebuhr

The Life And Letters Of Barthold George Niebuhr by The Chevalier Bunsen presents a biographical portrait drawn from Niebuhr’s letters and the editor’s notes. The volume centers on Barthold Georg Niebuhr’s life as a diplomat-scholar in the early 19th century, with particular focus on the years 1819–1823 when he balanced official duties in Rome and Italy with private family life and scholarly work. It traces his negotiations with papal authorities and German states, his reflections on liberal revolutions, and his attempts to steer a prudent, reform-minded course through a fractured post-Napoleonic Europe.Through intimate letters to Gretchen, Marcus, Lucia, and a circle of friends and colleagues—including Stein, Hardenberg, and de Serre—the book illuminates Niebuhr’s couple between public obligation and private life, the birth of Lucia, concerns about Gretchen’s health, aging, and the education of his son. It also foregrounds his scholarly labor—editing Cicero fragments, planning a Roman history, and engaging with philosophical and religious debates—alongside topographical and antiquarian pursuits in Rome. The work presents Niebuhr’s cautious diplomacy, his ethics of statecraft, and the enduring value he placed on education and philology as a counterweight to upheaval. It is epistolary, intimate, and reflective in tone, weaving political commentary with personal narrative and scholarly ambition.
