Life and Letters of Captain Marryat

Life And Letters Of Captain Marryat by Florence Marryat is a two-volume biographical work that reconstructs the life and correspondence of the English naval officer and novelist Frederick Marryat. This first volume (Vol. I) blends genealogical sketches, childhood recollections, and a detailed account of Marryat’s early career at sea with Lord Cochrane, including the Impérieuse’s engagements, the Bay of Arcasson incident, and the Almeria Bay actions, along with notes on his later service in the Mediterranean and the Burmese War. Drawing on family papers, official logs, and letters, Florence Marryat provides a portrait of a courageous, inventive sailor whose life bridged naval warfare and literary achievement. The work also includes anecdotes, prefaces, and an extensive set of letters and biographical material, offering insight into 19th-century naval life, public fame, and the making of a celebrated author. Florence acknowledges assistance from her aunt, Mrs. Bury Palliser, and her sister Augusta Marryat who originally collected the materials for this work.
