Second Edition. Three volumes, complete. Beautiful contemporary 3/4 dark brown leather binding with marbled (mostly red) paper-covered boards. Gilt lettering on spine. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. 6" x 8 3/4." All pages of all volumes, complete. Black-and-white illustrations (each volume has at least one), complete. Vol. I: 395 pages; four illustrations including frontispiece; tipped-in Errata in front. Vol. II: 393 pages; two illustrations including frontistpiece. Vol. III: 418 pages; one frontispiece; Appendices and Index in back. List of Illustrations in front of each volume. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning, occasional small marks, and occasional foxing. Covers are very clean and intact except for light wear to extremities, slight darkening to top edge of text block, and a small bump on fore-edge of Vol. III's back cover. Marbling on boards, edges of text block, and endpapers features rich, saturated colors and is still vibrant and not rubbed (slight darkening on top edges of text blocks but that is the only notable defect as to the marbling). Each volume and the overall set are Fine. Beautiful set of three volumes containing a biography of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), the eminent English naturalist, biologist, and geologist. Also includes an autobiographical chapter and reprinted letters by Charles. Edited by Francis Darwin (1848-1925), Charles's third son who went on to become a botanist.
