Two Volumes in maroon cloth with gilt embossed title to spine and gilt topstain, rough outer page edges. Date of 1898 appears on both title pages. Verso of title pages state Authorized Edition. Volume I, 558 pages and 4 black and white photo plates including a portrait of Darwin as the frontispiece under tissue guard that features the subject's facsimile signature "A. Darwin" printed beneath. Volume II has 562 pages including 530 of text plus appedices and an index. Volume I contains a frontispiece with tissue guard and one additional plate featuring a facsimile of a page of one of Darwin's 1837 notebooks. Books are clean and unmarked. Spines are a bit sunned.
