The Life And Letters Of Frederic Shields

Forgotten by many, Frederic Shields stands at the crossroads of faith, beauty, and the radical vision of the Pre-Raphaelites. His art was his devotion. In this intimate Victorian artist biography, Ernestine Mills traces the making of a shy, determined craftsman who became one of the most distinctive voices in 19th century British art. Combining life story with a rich correspondence, this biography and letters collection opens a rare window onto the studios, churches, and drawing rooms of Victorian England artists. Shields emerges as a key figure in British religious art and stained glass artist life, working in sympathy with the ideals of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and contributing to the wider current of Pre-Raphaelite art history. Mills writes as both chronicler and close observer, shaping an art history reference book that captures the discipline, doubts, and spiritual intensity behind his paintings, illustrations, and designs. For art history students, for Pre-Raphaelite enthusiasts, and for Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood fans, the gathered correspondence moves towards the complete letters of Frederic Shields, revealing friendships, commissions, and the moral struggles of an artist who refused to compromise.
