The Life & Letters of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky

The book begins with Tchaikovsky's early life, from his birth in 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia, to his upbringing in a musical yet emotionally turbulent family. Modest provides rich context about the formative years that influenced Tchaikovsky’s sensibilities, including his education at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where his talent blossomed. Throughout the biography, Modest portrays his brother not only as a musical genius but also as a sensitive and often troubled individual, deeply affected by his personal relationships and societal pressures. One of the key features of this biography is the extensive collection of Tchaikovsky’s letters, which reveal his inner thoughts, emotional struggles, and creative process. Through these letters, readers gain insight into the composer’s relationships with his patrons, such as Nadezhda von Meck, his creative collaborations, and his reflections on his own compositions, including famous works like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and his Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique). The biography also delves into Tchaikovsky’s personal life, including his struggles with his sexual identity in conservative 19th-century Russia, his brief and disastrous marriage, and the emotional isolation that often accompanied his success.
