The Life of Major J.G. Semple Lisle: Containing a Faithful Narrative of His Alternate Vicissitudes of Splendor and Misfortune

The Life Of Major J.G. Semple Lisle: Containing A Faithful Narrative Of His Alternate Vicissitudes Of Splendor And Misfortune by James George Semple Lisle documents a sprawling, self-authored memoir of a soldier whose career spans continents and eras. From his early debut in America in 1775 at age sixteen, through captivity and wounds, to service in Russia under Potemkin and the Empress Catherine, the narrative moves across Europe, the Baltic, Denmark, and beyond. It recounts his return to England, marriage, and travels in Flanders, Riga, Copenhagen, and Germany, interwoven with vivid portraits of court life, military reform, and dramatic episodes. The work is part biography, part travelogue, and part personal defense, detailing episodes such as the organization of troops, the launch of ships on the Nieper, and the author’s complicated later fortunes—including trials in Newgate, transportation, and eventual engagement with British affairs after captivity abroad. The book presents a highly personalized chronicle of a life lived in the shadow of emperors, generals, and political upheaval, offering both remarkable anecdotes and a controversial self-justification of his choices and actions.
