The Life Of The Right Rev. Daniel Wilson, D.D., Late Lord Bishop Of Calcutta And Metropolitan Of India: With Extracts From His Journals And Correspondence by Josiah Bateman offers a comprehensive biographical portrait of Daniel Wilson, tracing his long episcopal career across British India during a period of expansion, reform, and crisis. The work follows Wilson through his Seventh Visitation (1855–1857) as he strengthens church infrastructure, oversees cathedral endowment projects, expands missionary work, and negotiates relationships with CMS and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, all while engaging with colonial officials and high church governance. It also surveys earlier chapters on Wilison’s Second and First Metropolitical Visitations, doctrinal stances, and mission expansion across India, Burma, and frontier stations. Central themes include evangelical ministry, church-building as civilizational project, administrative reform, and the tension between provincial autonomy and mission-society oversight. The Indian Mutiny of 1857 frames the final period, with Wilson steering prayer, relief efforts, and leadership amid illness. The biography culminates in reflections on his energy, piety, missionary zeal, and enduring impact on the English Church in India, including his endowments, will, and lasting legacy.
