Small 8vo. 17cm, various paginations, plates and illustrations, half mid--century polished calf over marlbed boards with spines in six compartments, extra gilt decorations in the panels, crimson and brown morocco labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, bookseller ticket of D.P. Elder and Morgan Shephard of San Francisco on each volume's rear endpaper, Pottle 92. Croker's second edition, which reprints the original 100 letters from Johnson that Croker brought to light in 1831 with his first Boswell's Johnson. Pottle refers to this set as the first illustrated edition. A very charming example of the seminal biography, one of the high spots of western literature.
