The Life of Samuel B. Morse, LL.D., Inventor of the Electro-Magnetic Recording Telegraph. By Samuel Irenaeus Prime, D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1875, frontisportrait of Morse, illustrated, half leather, 9.5 x 6.25, 8vo. In good condition. Scuffing along edges and corners with dryness at joints. Spine abraded with slight discoloration and dryness along ends and bands. Marbled boards are slightly scuffed with minor fading. Bookplate of S.E. Rickerston Barr on pastedown. His relative (father?) James C. Rickerston of Milwaukee, Wisconsin signed the second end page and dated it Christmas 1895. To S.E.R. Barr 1923 Stratford, Connecticut below. James has signed the title page. Light toning throughout with minor instances of foxing. Some scattered, more heavy foxing at frontis and first leaf of text block. Binding remains tight and intact. Free of known markings. Please see photos. A comprehensive biography of the painter and inventor, Samuel Morse (1791-1872), written by American traveler, clergyman and writer Samuel I. Prime (d.1885) After having established his reputation as a portrait painter, in his middle age Morse contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs. He was a co-developer of Morse Code and helped to develop the commercial use of telegraphy.…
