Reviews
YA A sports browser's delight, this collection of photographs, culled from the files of Life magazine, recalls the personalities, games and other significant events in the sports world from 1936 to the last Olympics.

When LIFE first began publishing on November 23, 1936, it billed itself as America's picture magazine. In this ret rospective devoted to sports the editors have done, for the most part, a superb job in compiling some great photo graphs and accompanying explanatory texts. The black-and-white pictures, in particular, give the book a nostalgic bent; somehow the later color photos are more inclined to emphasize the spectacular rather than the basic quali ties of the various sports. The organiza tion of the book is somewhat disjointed, and several of the chapter headings are too all-encompassing, but the net result is a lively volume that will appeal to sports fans and photography buffs alike. Recommended for most public li braries. Samuel Simons, Memorial Hall Lib., Andover, Mass.
